Chimney Repointing

What is Chimney Repointing?

Chimney repointing is the process of repairing and replacing deteriorated mortar joints on a chimney stack. Chimneys take the worst of the weather of any part of a property — full exposure to wind, rain and frost on all sides — so they’re usually the first place mortar starts to fail, often years before the rest of the house needs attention.

Signs You Need Chimney Repointing

Common warning signs include mortar joints that are crumbling, cracked, or missing between the bricks, damp patches appearing on ceilings or walls near the chimney breast (especially after heavy rain), loose or leaning brickwork on the stack itself, and debris or small pieces of mortar collecting in the gutter or on the roof below. Rendered or capped chimneys can hide a failing structure underneath, so a stack that looks fine from the ground isn’t always a reliable guide — worth having it properly checked, particularly if the property is older or the chimney hasn’t been looked at in years.

Why Chimney Repointing Matters

A chimney stack sits directly above living space, so problems here don’t stay contained to the roofline. Failing mortar lets water into the stack, which can travel down through the flue or the surrounding brickwork and show up as damp patches inside the loft or upper rooms — often well before the outside damage looks serious. In cold weather, water that’s got into the joints can freeze and expand, cracking the brick itself rather than just the mortar around it, which turns a straightforward repointing job into a full rebuild if it’s left too long.

Movement is another common issue with older or taller stacks — repointing on its own won’t fix a chimney that’s structurally shifting, which is why we check for movement and fit Helibar wall ties where needed rather than just repointing over the problem.

Our Approach

Paul repoints full chimney stacks, fits Helibar wall ties where movement has occurred, and repairs ridge tiles as part of the same visit — so the whole chimney is dealt with in one job rather than several separate call-outs. Every job is carried out with full public liability insurance and dust extraction equipment as standard, working safely at height with the right access equipment for the property. With 18 years’ experience across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire, Paul works without subcontractors, so the same person assessing the job is the one carrying it out.

How Long Does Chimney Repointing Take?

Most single chimney stacks take a day or two, depending on the extent of the damage and whether wall ties or ridge tile repairs are needed alongside the repointing. Weather plays a bigger role with chimney work than most other jobs, since it’s carried out at height and mortar needs the right conditions to cure properly — Paul will factor this into the timescale given as part of your free quote.
